Red Velvet Cake Balls

I actually made them. They weren't the best, but they were definitely edible. I got the recipe from HERE.

Red Velvet Cake Balls
1 box red velvet cake mix (cook as directed on box for 13 X 9 cake)
1 can cream cheese frosting (16 oz.)
1 package chocolate bark (regular or white chocolate) --- I used regular chocolate chips.
wax paper
1. After cake is cooked and cooled completely, crumble into large bowl.
2. Mix thoroughly with 1 can cream cheese frosting. (It may be easier to use fingers to mix together, but be warned it will get messy.)---And by messy, I mean extremely messy.
3. Roll mixture into quarter size balls and lay on cookie sheet. (Should make 45-50. You can get even more if you use a mini ice cream scooper, but I like to hand roll them.)
4. Chill for several hours. (You can speed this up by putting in the freezer.)--- Or in the winter just place out in the snow
5. Melt chocolate in microwave per directions on package.
6. Roll balls in chocolate and lay on wax paper until firm. (Use a spoon to dip and roll in chocolate and then tap off extra.)
I also only melt a few pieces of chocolate bark at a time because it starts to cool and thicken. It’s easier to work with when it’s hot.

Here are the steps in pictures!
Flour the pan after greasing

Add all of the ingredients

Beat it all together

Red Velvet Cake

Crumble the cake into a bowl (a large one)

Mix in the cream cheese frosting and make balls. The ball all the way on the right bottom corner should be the correct size. I was pressed for time so I made larger ones.

One finished ball!

The balls I took to the dinner party.

They didn't look great, they didn't taste fantastic, but I know that I need to make them smaller like they're supposed to be and that way I can dip them easier. I also need to melt the chocolate more before dipping. That way it will just coat it evenly and not be gloppy. Regardless of all that, everyone ate them.
Let me know if you try it and how well it works out.

  1. Woot!!!! These look easier than I thought. Here are some tips I've read - smaller is supposed to be easier and if you add a bit (tsp?) of shortening (Crisco) it will thin the chocolate and make it easier. Even though the chocolate is basically just fat, we get ooooged out by adding crisco, so there is a specific product you can buy to thin the chocolate as well. But I think it's just crisco in disguise. ;) I'll be trying them... I'm really excited you put up pictures!

  2. Those look amazingly tasty - especially the addition of chocolate frosting instead of creamcheese with the red velvet. I may have to give these a shot!
